Dear Friend, My photo business is in a very exciting phase right now, and I want you to be part of the initial stages of a large project I’m putting together. I’m sending this invitation to my family and to people on several special e-mail lists in my business and personal address books. Some organizations will also receiving this invitation. It is long because there’s a lot of information to share with you, so please bear with me.
Recent Business History During the past 3 years, Hayward Photography has made great strides forward, especially since this past May. Here are a few highlights; my framed photographs “Winter Solstice-Eve Sunrise 2007” and “Mammoth Hot Springs, Storm and Mount Everts” received one of nine, and one of five, purchase awards, respectively at the 2008 and 2009 Wyoming Governor’s Capital Arts Exhibition. “Mammoth Hot Springs…” was also given the Peoples’ Choice Award at the 2009 exhibition. I’ve received some great media attention due to these awards and to other factors recently as well.
This past May, I was commissioned to create a short photo essay slide show of Carbon County, Wyoming, for the Wind Energy and Scenic Considerations Workshop at the University of Wyoming. I ultimately used still images to produce a 10-minute environmental documentary movie titled The Wind Farm Project for the workshop. The movie was also shown at the Wyoming Governor’s Wind Symposium in mid-August. You can view the movie if you go to < www.uwyo.edu/ENR/IENR/info.asp?p=12721> and click on my link (3rd down) and then click on the same basic link on the next page. If you Google “wind symposium Wyoming,” you’ll find the movie on either of the top two links. The first link is the site above. The other is the Governor’s web page.
The Wyoming Project The next step for my business is to fund a large project to document existing landscapes across this spectacular state of Wyoming. The project already has the support of Wyoming’s Governor Dave Freudenthal, Director Milward Simpson of Wyoming’s State Parks and Cultural Resources Department, the Wyoming Arts Council, environmental organizations, and many others.
The project’s tentative title is The Wyoming Project. It emerged directly from the Wind Farm Project and will create a collection of photographic and narrative records of Wyoming’s landscapes that will be, or are likely to be, developed in the very near future; landscapes that will be visually and biologically altered forever through development, but that can be preserved now, through the project’s documentation, for current and future generations.
Project Purposes There are several initial purposes for the project.
First is to create an historic digital photographic and narrative archive of much of Wyoming’s Landscapes as they exist during the next year or more. While I will mostly document natural landscapes I will also photograph the natural landscape with the inclusion of human-made elements, including energy extracting and producing facilities, the transmission infrastructure for electricity, oil and gas, as well as roads, reservoirs, industry, ranches, farms, towns, cities and residential building across our urban, mountain and prairie regions.
Second is to use the archive to create an objective photographic and narrative multi-media presentation from the project images and narrative records. This presentation will be available to Wyoming colleges, K-12 schools, civic and arts organizations, churches and other Wyoming groups interested in seeing some seldom seen Wyoming Landscapes that are likely to be altered in the near future.
Third is to produce a variety of products using the photographic images and narrative texts from, and about, the Wyoming Project, and sell the products to help reach three main goals; To increase awareness of the Wyoming Project and of its messages to encourage collaboration in the process of development across Wyoming. To help fund similar future projects. To help fund one or more non-profit organizations that champion similar collaborative work helping people of opposing ideologies better understand each other and their stances on a variety of issues.
You are Invited To An Event To Kick Off the Wyoming Project The project’s one-year budget is currently at $120,000. Most of that funding will be acquired through grants and donations. However, I need to raise some initial working capital to pay myself for the time spent working to secure those grants and donations and to acquire some much needed equipment and software. Hence this appeal and invitation to you!!!
I have a large inventory of framed photographs here in Laramie. That inventory (over $18,000 of framed photographs at normal retail prices) represents more than enough capital for me to easily fund phase one of this project. I want to launch into the Wyoming Project with an event that entails a lot of fun and excitement, and I want to share that with you. Toward that end, I am planning several activities for the first weekend in December. That Friday night, December 4, each of you will have the opportunity to purchase pieces of art from my inventory at special reduced prices.
Discounts on My Fine Art Photos But first, I want to offer you the opportunity to receive an even larger discount if you send in a pre-event down payment on my inventory and/or un-printed art. I’ll accept down payments on my photographs during the next 3 weeks, ending on Sunday, November 15th. People providing down payments will get their “first-payment-first-choice” of photos from my framed inventory and/or from the un-printed photographs during the event. The person who makes the first down payment gets first choice of inventory or non-printed art, etc. Everyone making down payments during the 3 weeks will receive a 25% discount on inventory pieces and/or a 15% discount on pieces that are not currently in my printed inventory. After everyone who made pre-event down payments has chosen their pieces of art, the remaining inventory and non-printed photographs will be open to the other people attending the invitation-only event and to the public on the following day. However, people not making a down payment will receive only 15% and 5% off of the retail price, respectively. So, making a pre-event down payment will garner you an additional 10% savings as well as an early choice from my printed inventory.
Here’s how the discounts will work; People making down payments will receive the 25% or the 15% discounts mentioned above on the amount of money they put down. You will then receive the public’s smaller discount rate for additional costs in purchasing your choice of art. So, if you put $1000 down on the inventory art and choose a piece that is retail priced at $1400, then $1000 of the retail price will be discounted by 25%, to a total cost of $750. The remaining $400 will be discounted by the 15%, reducing that portion to $340, for a total savings of $310, bringing the final cost to only $1090 (plus tax). The same thing will happen with the unprinted photos you order, except the discounts will be only 15% and 5%.
If you are unable to attend the event but want to participate in the pre-event down payment, contact me and we’ll make arrangements so you can still choose your piece of inventory art during the event, in absentia. Also, if you want to preview the actual inventory at my gallery, contact me for a private viewing.
My pre-event, down payment goal is to raise $5000. Funds raised by the pre-event down payments will help purchase some much needed camera equipment and computer hardware and software and will finance my time spent producing the fundraising event and beginning the project fund raising. Funds raised during the event itself, and any surplus pre-event capital, will be used to purchase more necessary equipment and to pay my living expenses while working to raise the remainder of the project’s one-year, $120,000 budget.
To View My Art Inventory I have upload my current inventory pieces along with their dimensions and prices onto my Flickr site via my web site. You can browse the inventory by going to <haywardphoto.com> and then clicking on the Flickr Photo Gallery link in the line of links that are below “Hayward Photography.
Description of the Types of Prints in my Inventory You will notice the 4 different kinds of prints listed in the photo descriptions; Cibachrome, LightJet, Ink Jet and Giclee’.
A Cibachrome print is an archival print that is made when light sensitive paper is exposed by projecting a positive image through an enlarger onto the paper, which is then chemically processed. A LightJet print is an archival print made by using a laser beam to expose light sensitive photographic paper which is then developed in a similar process to the pre-digital, Cibachrome print. My Ink Jet prints are printed on very high resolution ink jet printers which use archival paper and inks, and Giclee’ prints are the same high quality ink jet prints that are printed on beautiful water color papers.
